Reading aloud is good for a child’s development. But above all, reading aloud should be fun and something that both child(ren) and parent can enjoy. Because of the story being read, but especially because of the conviviality and attention to each other. Young children learn a lot from reading aloud. Children learn new words while reading aloud and they learn how a good sentence is constructed.
At Alles Kidz Kinderopvang, we communicate with the children in Dutch.
Pedagogical staff and interns are expected to speak correct Dutch. During various activities, attention is paid to language development. By talking, singing and reading aloud to the children, language development is stimulated. But we also support language development by giving explanations and playing together.
One (baby groups) or two picture books (toddler groups and pre-school) are the focus of each theme. A picture book is read (interactively) according to the four steps of the VVE method Piramide. Following the interactive reading, an activity is planned, such as role-play or a creative or movement activity.
The effects of reading aloud become even more positive if the story is illustrated and if readers seek interaction with children, e.g. by asking questions or pointing to the text. The same applies to melody and rhyme. In children, language development, language skills and even fantasy are promoted by rhyme. The melody of songs makes words more memorable.
Babies can do more than you think. From the very first day, a baby listens to your voice. In the first year, a child develops quickly and learns many new things. Exploring a book with a baby on your lap is instructive. It stimulates a child’s language and speech development and increases concentration.
