- Don’t ignore your child’s feelings. By doing so, you throw the door shut to an open relationship with your child.
- Being too protective. This gives them wrong expectations of life, they think things are easier than they really are and therefore it is difficult to deal with setbacks.
- They may seem annoying at times, but provide clarity to your child. It is important to both have the same rules and to be consistent in this.
- Your child as a friend. Of course, it is great to have a good relationship with your child. But it is still a parent-child relationship. It’s not the intention to discuss your own worries or attempts with your child to make him or her anxious.
- Solving problems yourself. Unfortunately, it is a fact of life that you will run into problems. It is therefore a good idea to teach your child early on to try to solve them themselves. This is a learning process for them.
- A child is not an extension of yourself! Always see your child as his or her own individual. Let him or her develop himself or herself by making his or her own choices.
